What Is Lemon Law?
Lemon laws are state and federal regulations that protect consumers who purchase cars that do not meet the standards of quality and performance. The term “lemon” refers to the fact that a car may look perfect on the outside, but when taking a closer look at its inner workings, it does not actually meet standards nor are they useful. This is similar to how ripe lemons look beautiful and tasty, but they are sour on the inside. Typically, the Lemon law applies to defective transportation vehicles such as cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats, and more. There are also other types of lemon law that have to do with products, services, and even animals!
Each state has its own lemon laws. California’s Lemon Law protects consumers when they buy or lease a new car that cannot be repaired. If you have a case, there is a possibility that you are entitled to a replacement of the vehicle or a refund. According to California Lemon Law, off-roading vehicles or vehicles that are not registered under the California Vehicle Code as well as vehicles that have been abused are not covered by the Lemon law.
The federal lemon law, also known as the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 protects consumers nationwide and at most covers mechanical defects -- it is the state lemon laws that are more expansive.
